As one of Tilt Architecture’s first projects in 2018, we explored various design iterations, before settling on a modest four-storied scheme.
An existing ground floor podium structure that once housed a mechanics workshop will be seismically strengthened to provide a robust base supporting three additional levels of LVL timber framed construction. The proposed building form is simple, largely driven by the footprint of the existing building. Brick cladding and deep fenestration express the solid character of the existing podium, whereas lighter weight metal cladding and aluminium fins on the upper levels allude to a more contemporary aesthetic above.
In total, 12 apartments are proposed, with a mix of 2 and 3 bedrooms. generous living rooms and balconies all face North, with a terraced community garden to the West of the building. Ample bicycle parking spaces, along with good proximity to public transport and the city proper will provide residents with comfortable, contemporary home a stones throw from Wellington’s city amenities.
